Environmental education in the concrete jungle

Abstract
This paper presents a learning experience carried out with a group of 5-year-old children in the school year 2013-2014. The focus of the experience was to identify green areas in the city with a view to knowing, sharing as well as looking after them. While creating awareness on the topic of environment, this experience offered families different quality free-time activities to be enjoyed with children in the surrounding nature. It was also about demanding from urban development Administration more green spaces guaranteeing a healthy life, which, even in cities, is an enforceable right to claim. Field trips in the surrounding natural environment, guidance about and knowledge of the community, readings, planting as well as courses of action involving children in improving local life have been the key action areas for this school initiative, which has been gradually shaped by experience.
