Policy and Evaluation of Early Childhood Education in Brazil: tensions and challenges

Abstract
This paper seeks to contribute to the debate about education policy and evaluation in early childhood education in Brazil considering the latest changes in federal legislation about this subject, and it considers the current tensions and debates regarding the policies and practices assessment designed for the education of young children in the country. The Brazilian National Education Law (N.9394/1996) guides the Brazilian educational system and with complementary legislation has suffered constant changes and tensions in early childhood education. In this context, this paper examines the role of the General Coordination of Early Childhood Education (COEDI) at the Ministry of Education and the researchers and activists actions regarding the debate and public policy intervention in early the childhood education field, particularly with respect to assessment topics.
